The Iron Woman Who Turned a Cancer Diagnosis into a WFPB Revolution
Introduction
It was a sunny Fourth of July when Dr. Ruth Heidrich, a seasoned marathon runner, discovered something that would turn her life upside down.
Early Career and Turning Point:
To Ruth, her rigorous exercise routine and a diet she believed was impeccably healthy—rich in lean meat proteins and dairy were her insurance policy against illness.
While recovering from surgery, she found a newspaper item asking for volunteers for a breast cancer/diet research study. She ran to the phone, got her medical records and went to see Dr. John McDougall right away.
After being convinced of the results of his research so far, she left his office a low-fat vegan. Dr. Heidrich also decided against chemotherapy and radiation, choosing a whole food plant-based diet as her sole weapon against the cancer.
Advocacy and Impact
Dr. Heidrich didn’t just adopt a vegan lifestyle; she became a fervent advocate for it. Switching the focus of her doctorate from Psychology to Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, she dedicated her life to understanding the profound impact diet has on health.
Dr. Heidrich wanted to prove that one could complete in one of the toughest races in the world on a WFPB diet. Exactly two years later, she crossed the finish line of the Kona Ironman Triathlon, becoming the first vegan to do the Ironman.
Since her diagnosis in 1982, she has completed six Ironman Triathlons, won 8 Gold Medals in the U.S.Senior Olympics and over 900 athletic trophies. She has also been recognized as one of the “Ten Fittest Women in North America.”
Contributions to Public Health
Dr. Heidrich has also authored several books that outline the benefits of a WFPB diet, including “A Race For Life,” detailing her journey from cancer patient to world-class triathlete.
She is launching an updated edition of A Race For Life, to be released May 15 on Amazon. In addition to her story of beating stage four breast cancer, advocating for veganism and humanity’s fight against cancer, this book will have a whole new chapter named “Killer Breasts”, which will talk about how her breasts have tried to kill Dr. Heidrich twice!
Her advocacy extends into her public speaking and her role in the documentary “Forks Over Knives,” where she highlights the health transformations due to dietary changes.
Conclusion: Living Proof of Resilience and Health
Dr. Ruth Heidrich’s journey from a shocking cancer diagnosis to the forefront of health advocacy highlights her profound commitment to her health and wellbeing.
