In his early years of training, Dr. Barnard worked in a hospital morgue where he assisted with autopsies.
One day, after the death of a patient due to a heart attack, he assisted the pathologist in examining the body. The pathologist sliced open a coronary artery, revealing the insides clogged with atherosclerotic plaque – which Dr. Barnard recalls resembled ‘rusty pipes’.
This visceral image indicated the severe narrowing of the arteries due to the buildup of plaque, a direct consequence of dietary choices, particularly high intakes of animal proteins and fats – the very things he had been taught were beneficial.
Dr. Barnard was perturbed. That day, the ribs served in the hospital cafeteria bore an uncanny resemblance to those he had just sewn up on the autopsy table. This eerie coincidence initiated a shift in his perspective, setting the stage for a lifelong transformation.

He has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.
